Dr. Richard M. Seugling is the Manufacturing Engineering Section (MES) Leader within the Materials Engineering Division (MED) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). MES comprises over 200 machinists, technicians, and engineers who support various manufacturing efforts across LLNL programs. Dr. Seugling has been with LLNL since 2004, contributing to experimental programs for over 20 years. He began his career in the Precision Systems and Manufacturing group within MED, supporting the National Ignition Campaign (NIC), before transitioning to the Defense Technologies Engineering Division, focusing on High Energy Density Science (HEDS). Before joining LLNL, Dr. Seugling held a postdoctoral appointment from the National Research Council (NRC) at the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST), where he worked in the Mass and Force group, exploring alternative methods for defining the unit of mass. Over the past 20 years, he has advanced precision manufacturing and metrology technologies, supporting multiple LLNL programs with over 50 publications and multiple patents. Dr. Seugling is active in international organizations and the international Precision Engineering community, currently serving as an associate editor for the Journal of Precision Engineering. He also represents LLNL at the Interagency Manufacturing Operations Group (IMOG) within the National Security Complex (NSE) and as a corporate member of The International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP). Dr. Seugling holds a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
