UNC Charlotte’s 49er Rocketry Team took Second place in the launch division of the 2023 NASA Student Launch Competition. The competition took place in April in Huntsville, Alabama. Each year, NASA challenges middle school, high school, college and university students from across the United States to design, build and launch a high-powered amateur rocket, fly it to a predetermined altitude and make a successful landing. This year, UNC Charlotte also won several other awards: 1st place: Project Review, 1st place: Safety, 2nd place: Altitude, 3rd place: Payload award, 3rd place: Social media award. The team will earn a $2,5000 prize provided by the National Space Club of Huntsville. “This team’s consistent hard work, adherence to schedule and budget, excellent design and construction methods and quality STEM outreach activities are just a part of their amazing performance all season.” said Mr. Terry Abell, the co-chair of education for the National Space Club of Huntsville, while announcing the results. The team, consisting of ten college of engineering students, competed in the NASA Student Launch as their engineering senior design project.
