Academic Petitions 101
An Academic Petition is a request for an exception to an academic policy or a published deadline. Typically, Academic Petitions require action from the student’s Advisor. In some cases approval is required by the Department Chair, and Associate Dean of the College. If the petition is regarding a particular course, the Instructor may also be required to review the petition.
Graduate Academic Petition Types

Concentration Add/Change | To add, drop, or replace a concentration | |
Course Overload | To request an increase of maximum hours (>12) for a specific term | |
Early Entry | To declare the graduate courses taken while in early entry status, and identify those which will double count toward the undergraduate degree | |
Grade Type Change | To request Audit or Pass/Unsatisfactory grading for a course (standard grade courses are not eligible for Pass/Unsatisfactory) | Deadline to submit this request is by midnight on the last day of the add/drop period for the term. |
Late Add | To request a late add into a course for which you were unable to register for while Add/Drop was open | |
Late Withdrawal | To request withdrawal from a course after the withdrawal deadline published in the Academic Calendar | |
Late Withdrawal Due to Extenuating Circumstances | To request withdrawal with extenuating circumstances (available to students for serious medical or crisis related reasons that impacted a student’s ability to withdraw) | |
Leave of Absence | To request a leave of absence, not to exceed beyong one year | |
Other – Course Related | To request a course related exception not covered by any other petition type | |

Substitution – Program Requirement | To request substitution of a course in a specific program requirement as an exception to catalog degree requirements | Example: Non-MEGR course(s) in fallthrough; to substitute/slot course in Electives program requirement |
Suspension Appeal | To appeal graduate program suspension and request reinstatement | Must be done within 30 days of notification of suspension by the Graduate School |
Transfer of Credit – External | To request transfer of courses taken at another university to UNC Charlotte | Requires: Official copy of transcript Course descriptions from the previous institution Course Map |
Transfer of Credit – Internal | To request transfer of courses taken at UNC Charlotte from one program to another | No more than 6 credits taken in post-baccalaureate status may be transferred to a degree program. |
How to submit an Academic Petition
Submitting an Academic Petition online via my.charlotte.edu:
Step 1: Log on my.charlotte.edu
Step 2: Click on Banner Self Service
Step 3: Click on tab the reads Student Service/ Student Account
Step 4: Click on Student Records
Step 5: Locate and click on Academic Petition- Undergraduate or Graduate
Step 6: From the Drop-down Menu choose the Academic Petition type
Step 7: Provide requested details, justification and upload supporting documentation, if necessary
Step 8: Click submit and your petition will be forwarded to the approvers.
