Course Registration guidelines

For All Students
  • When experiencing registration errors due to missing prerequisite, field of study restriction, repeat attempt, duplicate course (special topics) or time conflict errors, please submit a graduate permit request.
  • Graduate Students are restricted to 12 credit hours per semester (Fall/Spring), and up to 9 hours in the Summer term. If a student plans to take more than the restricted credits, the case must be discussed with the advising team.  With the recommendation from the Associate Chair of Graduate Programs, the student can then submit a Course Overload petition to request the authorization to enroll in additional hours.  The Graduate School makes the final approval.
For Ph.D. Students

Ph.D. students are required to enroll in 8000-level courses.   Before registration, students are advised to consult with the advising team (i.e., the graduate academic advisor and the Associate Chair for Graduate Programs) and dissertation advisors to make the course selection. The Plan to Study shall be updated every semester accordingly.

  • All Ph.D. students are required to complete GRAD 8990_Academic Integrity in the first semester, and GRAD 8302_Responsible Conduct of Research in the first or second semester.
  • All Ph.D. students are required to register for MEGR 8000_Research Seminar each semester through completion of proposal defense.
  • If a Ph.D. student is interested in taking MEGR 8892 – Individual Study & Projects, the student needs to (1) discuss with the dissertation advisor to prepare a course syllabus, and (2) complete an agreement form.  The two documents need to be submitted to the Associate Chair for Graduate Programs for review and approval.   After that, the course will be set up, and the student will receive the authorization to register.
  • If a Ph.D. student is interested in taking non-MEGR courses which support their research, please consult with the dissertation advisor.  With the support from the dissertation advisor, please inform the case to the Associate Chair for Graduate Programs for final approval.
  • If a Ph.D. student is interested in taking 5000-level courses, please discuss the case with the advising team for additional advice.
For M.S.M.E. Students

M.S.M.E. students may enroll in 5000-, 6000- and 7000-level courses.  Before registration, students are advised to consult with the advising team (i.e., the graduate academic advisor and the Associate Chair for Graduate Programs) and thesis advisors (if any) to make the course selection. The Plan to Study shall be updated every semester accordingly.

  • If an M.S.M.E. thesis student is interested in taking non-MEGR courses which support their research, please consult with the thesis advisor. With the support from the thesis advisor, please inform the case to the Associate Chair for Graduate Programs for final approval.
