Balan’s research is in the area of pitch tool characterization. As pitch tooling is the preferred tool for precision optical polishing, it is important to be able to assess its current condition in a polishing shop. Current methods are typically heavy on operator intuition, and not quantitative. The main objective is to determine the characteristics of pitch samples (Acculap standard and Acculap soft) using frequency response function techniques. These techniques will provide quick, easy, and quantitative ways to determine the pitch condition in chemical mechanical polishing.

Nagarjuna is evaluating micro/nano level features like geometric dimensions and tolerances using White Light Interferometer. Obtained results and SEM images will be analyzed using the Mat Lab program developed. Validation of the software developed will be reported. Possibility of including various micro-feature analysis techniques in the developed software will be studied. An attempt to develop a Web Based Micro-Feature Analysis System will also be made.

Joy is developing two- and three-dimensional finite element models for the prediction of residual stresses and distortion during quenching of extruded thin-walled shapes made of an aluminum alloy. The two-dimensional models will be based on the generalized plane-strain theory which can capture the out-of-plane bending-type deformations. Three-dimensional models will also be developed for more realistic simulations of the quenching of extruded shapes. Comparisons of the results from these two sets of models will be made and the suitability of the generalized plane-strain models for solving quenching problems will be investigated.

Sumit’s research involves numerical modeling of turbulent mixing in a spherical implosion. An implosion device such as an Inertial Confinement Fusion capsule consists of a fuel material surrounded by a spherical metal shell. During the implosion of these devices, triggered by laser bombardment, the turbulent mixing that occurs between the layers is of paramount importance, largely affecting the performance of the device. Thus, mathematical models need to be developed to simulate the turbulent mixing. We simulate the mixing in such an implosion in spherical geometries. The results obtained from these simulations can be used for validating the existing engineering models and in designing control strategies to maximize performance of fusion fuel capsules. The turbulent mixing studied here also occurs prominently in supernova formation, where it is regarded as the primary mechanism of detonation.

Diego is working in the area of characterizing microstructure and mechanical properties of ultrafine grained (UFG tungsten from bottom-up method. Ultrafine grained tungsten can be produced using bottom-up or top-down methodologies. In the first, ultrafine powders consisting of nanometer-sized particles are compacted into bulk form, using ways similar to those applied in conventional powder metallurgy. In this project, the quasi-static and dynamic compressive behavior of the UFG tungsten produced by bottom-up method will be evaluated. Quasi-static compression tests will be performed using an MTS machine at room temperature, and uni-axial dynamic compressive tests will be performed on the Kolsky bar (or split-Hopkinson pressure bar, SHPB) system. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) will be used to observe the post-loading surfaces of the deformed samples to understand the deformation and failure mechanisms under quasi-static and dynamic compression.
